Custom VBA Solutions for Microsoft Office

Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), included with Microsoft Office, allows for more than simple macro recordings. Sophisticated applications can be developed that automate many workflow tasks, dramatically improving efficiency.

CSIT is able to build custom solutions - from simple file handling in Word, to complex data manipulation and calculations in Excel - that improve productivity, reduce errors, and hide complex calculations from the user.

CASE STUDY: CSIT identified a need to improve a client's file handling in Word. This busy law firm often has a need to create several documents relating to a particular client. Because several employees may be working on any one client's file, each file created has a specific file name and directory in which it must be created, identifying the client, document type, matter and document status.

Because of the complex file naming structure, the firm's employees would often misplace files, or inadvertently over-write documents - mainly due to human error - requiring substantial double handling and rework. CSIT developed a VBA addition to Word that simplified the save process, automating filename generation and existing file checking, resulting in a dramatic reduction in misplaced files, and eliminating accidental overwrites.

CASE STUDY 2: Calculating penalty interest charges can be a laborious, error-prone process - particularly where the debt spans several years. The calculations must be split into segments corresponding to dates when the interest rate changes. A further complication involves transitions between leap and non-leap years.

CSIT developed a Penalty Interest Calculator within Excel that allows this time-consuming process to be completed in a matter of seconds. The calculator handles leap year transitions, and also has the ability to take into account additional payments or charges, and outputs a report that displays a detailed breakdown of the interest charged per rate period and the sum total of interest over the entire calculation period. Because the software was customised for the client, unique features were added that were particular to the clients needs.
